There seems to be some sort of doomsday special on the National Geographic channel in the UK tonight. I have not had a chance to watch any of it but one of the shows caught my eye. 2012:The Final Prophecy. Its about the mayans and the synopsis says that they predicted stuff like WWI and the Tsunami in 2006. Here's the link here:

Is any of this even true? Im wondering if they are going down the same road as the History channel here.

Haha well the show they have on after it is Doomsday: 2210? I dont think they can make their mind up lol.
Oh btw did they even predict anything other than solar cycles?

The Maya did not predict solar cycles. They did predict lunar cycles, and the cycles of some of the planets.

They did predict lunar cycles, and the cycles of some of the planets.

Not even impressed. There were other good astronomers before the Maya, that were even better than the Maya. They had observatories (very rudical, thought). They used them to watch the sky and predict the lunar cycles and 'calculate' the orbit of planets. There was no way to predict solar cycles. If you wanna know the solar cycles, you need technology that the Maya didn't have (hmm, obviously, yeah).

Yes, frequently the doomsayers make it out as if the Maya were the only people doing Astrology/Astronomy, completely setting aside the Greeks, who were busy calculating the size of the earth and figuring out the principles of precession.

Guess that just History Channel fans could know that it contradicts itself, but most of the viewers watch a documentary or two in a month. They don't realize. The worst part is that HC viewers think that watching HC they are acquiring knowledge, but they also acquire ignorance. HC is both -ignorance and science-, and that's why it is crap.
