I just really don't know what to think anymore, a lot of the 2012 doomsday material is just strung together in such a way as to make it soo convincing….

As usually you can't verify claim, but below are selected quotes from article:

A University of British Columbia Professor published an online article that projected an 800m asteroid would hit Antarctica in the fall of 2012. His article was on the www.phas.ubc.ca website for 2 days before it abruptly disappeared. The initial data was gathered by The Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The theorized asteroid was then tracked by Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea, which (with the Adaptive Optics Bonnette)

One week after this mysterious article disappeared, “Canadian and American astronauts say the world needs to prepare for the big one — the asteroid impact that could one day devastate the Earth.Veteran Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is president of the Association of Space Explorers, which has prepared a detailed report on the asteroid threat.

The Canadian Space Agency intends to launch NEOSSat next March to look for asteroids that may be hiding near the sun.

The article hypothesized a 94% probability that the asteroid would impact on the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf and cause 2/3 of ice on Antarctica to crumble into sea. The article surmised the total collapse of all Antarctic ice within 2-4 months after impact.

The Mayans, the Sumerians, the Babylonian civilization, native Americans and countless other cultures have foretold this event. The earth is going to get hit by a small object that is in tow of a much larger object. The larger object revisits the earth on a predictable cycle.

Americans Military forces now control all of the high mountain ranges and have been building bunkers for years, this is the reason for staying in Afghanistan. Only the super rich elite will be invited escape the apocalypse. 90% of the death and destruction will come from the panic and wars after the event.

If you're aware of this tactic, why is there a need to not know what to think anymore? If you're aware that doomsday material is strung together to make it seem convincing, yet still be complete nonsense, why do you still not know what to think about it?

There is so much crap in those choice quotes I don't really know how anyone can be in any doubt about them. There comes a point where claims rightly get dismissed just for mentioning one or two buzz words. With 2012, any mention of the Mayans and you can throw it out of the window, any mention of any of the 'countless other cultures' and you can throw it out the window - you might even have a case for suggesting that any mention of military involvement results in throwing it out the window.

If you're actively searching for this stuff Ann, I do hope it's for personal amusement at the claims rather than a case of you believing them - if it's the latter, the most effective answer you'll get is 'stop looking'.

The article is nonsense, riddled with errors.

For instance: BLAST is a real telescope. http://iopscience.iop.org/0004-637X/681/1/400/

But from that page, we find:

The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) is a suborbital surveying experiment designed to study the evolutionary history and processes of star formation in local galaxies (including the Milky Way) and galaxies at cosmological distances.

And what does 'sub-millimeter' mean in this case?

It means that the instrument is looking for microwaves. This telescope couldn't discover an asteroid, because it can't see asteroids. It can only see microwaves between 250 and 500 μm. Completly useless for discovering rocky bodies close to the sun. In fact, the only thing it is good for is looking for interesting microwave sources that signal star formation both in the milky-way galaxy and distant galaxies.

What the author has done here is simple: They've taken real programs, and attached them to their claims, attempting to give their claims a paint-job of legitimacy, hoping that nobody checks beyond looking up "BLAST", and "NEOSSat" and finding that they are real projects.

In addition, we have a lot of quotes from this supposed 'disappeared' article by a nameless "University of British Columbia professor", and some name dropping of real people talking about real issues, again to try to lend an air of legitimacy to their nonsense claim.

Notice that Hadfield does not claim that an asteriod will hit antartica in 2012, but rather discusses the need to plan for the possibility of having to divert an astroid at some point in the future. This is not an unusual claim, and former astronaut Rusty Schweickart's B612 foundation says the same thing¹. The author of the article you quote from just pulled that bit of information in to try to bolster their nonsense claim.

"Canada Maps Antarctic Ice shelves in preparation of 2012 Asteroid Strike"

Well Canada is taking the lead role in mapping the possible outcome of the Interstellar impact on the Ice-shelf in Antarctica. They are trying to determine if the entire Ice-shelf will collapse into the sea as their computer models suggest. If it does… World wide ocean levels will go up approx 70 Meters. That would displace about 1 billion people and wipe out 1/3 of the World’s food supply.

As I previously reported all the big chiefs from NATO were in Canada prior to the G20 meeting for some high-level emergency contingency planning… not to pressure Canada to stay in the Afghan mission….that was just a ruse…. but to address a much more serious matter.

The thing is, that this is even debunked by folks at project Avalon. To me, that says a lot. Furthermore Rajaten ("famous" ATS:er) received the following response when he re-published the Beforeitsnews-article:

The 2012 hoaxer apparently mixed up the complete melting of all the ice in the complete world which gives raise to 66 meters max.

There is not enough ice in this ice shelf to raise the sea to that level.

Too bad to you but I doubt that an 800 meter asteroid would be able to produce enough energy to melt that much of ice instantly. LOL

An 800 m sphere asteroid with density of 2,600 kg/m^3 would have a mass of 5.576x10^12 kg
An impact at 11 km/s would be 3.37x10^14 Joules

I am wondering how much water can be melted with this amount of Joules.

1 cubic kilometre, according to my calculations. That's not much of the ice shelf.
Latent heat of fusion of water = 334 kJ/kg.

I just calculated that a 1.2 million tonnes TNT nuclear bomb (the modern nuclear bomb) creates 1.42x10^15 joules energy.

So the this asteroid impact would be about 25% or a typical nuclear bomb.

So we are only talking about 0.0028 m increase of sea level. 3 mm!

You've assumed a velocity of 11 m/sec.

11 KM/s = 11000 m/s ;-)

Energy is indeed 3.337x10^20 joules.
The water would be 1 million cubic kilometre melted and a raise of sea level 2.8 meters.

I just checked for a 400 m radius asteroid, hitting the ice, then that would mean a raise of 0.000349611 km = 0.349611 m of sea level.

Edit: Today is not my day of maths and unit conversion LOL I should stay away from a calculator LOL

All you need to do is to define the Radius in meters and speed traveling (11,000 m/s).

I have a unit error somewhere in these formulas because I get 2.7 mm instead of 2.7 m for the 800 meter radius object and I fail to find it. My dyslexia is bad today.

Interesting, I checked with the simulator and apparently with the same numbers I get about 10 times less energy released compared to my calculations.

I am wondering if it loses 90% of the impact energy when it goes through the atmosphere in this simulator.
This would mean that the sea level would only raise 0.28 m instead of 2.8m by melting the ice.

Ahhh I see they use the diameter!
In my calculations I used the radius.

This means that the fictive 800m diameter is a 400m radius object which translates to only a 0.35 m (35 cm) increase at sea level.

And an 200 m radius object (like YU55 400 m diameter) would only increase the sea level with 0.0437014 m (4.3 cm)

Well, the global warming is supposed to cause a sea level rise that range from 0,18m to 0.59m. We are talking about all Greenland and Antarctica melting… I don't know if this can be a threat for the coastal cities. I don't think so.

Density is average 2600 kg/m^3 for an asteroid.

Velocity is depending on the trajectory. Normally you use 11 km/s if it gets captured by Earth gravitationally and pulled in. It could be higher when it is moving in opposite trajectory and has a lucky day that Earth is right in front of you speeding full speed towards you, as an asteroid.

(Escape velocity at 1 AU = 42 km/s, Earth moving in orbit = 30 km/s, full frontal collision would be 42+30 = 72 km/s) Note this full frontal can not be a gravitation attracted object by Earth.

The angle is depending on the incoming trajectory.

Apophis: If it impacted Ice then the energy would melt ice so that the sea level would raise 0.0134402 m (1.3 cm).

It might surprise you that the maximum is 72 km/s but anything that moves faster than 42 km/s at 1 AU could never be in a periodic orbit around the Sun.
