anyone here think we will be inhabiting another planet in the near future? not because the world is ending or anything im just saying like we find a way to terriaform a planet like mars or the moon and we can have people live there will this be happening in my lifetime im 17 atm i think it would be REALLY cool
It would be cool, yes, should I now pour cold water on some of your dreams?
Successful terraforming would take generations before any sense of 'completion' had been achieved, perhaps on the order of a few hundred years. Of course, the ideas of how to go about doing it have been around for long enough, and as more and more is learned from what we are capable of sending to Mars (rovers and the like), more and more can be learned about how best to go about terraforming.
Seeing as we haven't started the process, and don't look like starting any time soon, it's a really rather distant pipe dream - we might want to scale it back a bit, if you want things to happen faster. Bases and extended stays would be nice to see, but again on Mars, within our lifetime, doesn't seem too hopeful there. The Moon perhaps, if anyone can be bothered to have a look. Even an asteroid might serve some interest (there's some fascinating ideas about mining asteroids for resources, so that might be one to look out for).
But enough cold water, because maybe, juuuuust maybe there'll be a push for a manned Mars landing. Obama's said he want's to see it by around 2030, Congress approved the idea I think, but then you still need to develop eeeeeverything that goes along with it, and you still need to learn an awful lot, especially about long distance and time spent in space - can humans get there in one piece, in a fit enough state to actually do something useful?
Let's not forget that human space exploration is only 50 years old, we're still learning how to crawl, let alone walk. But, set your mind to it, set yourself a goal, and the Moon landings have shown what we can do - just need to put in the time, effort, and the cost to do more.
Wouldn't it be nice to swim among the stars? I believe that humans will eventually go into space. But until then, let's enjoy our Earth.
Our fears are more numerous than our dangers, and we suffer more in our imagination than in reality.
Maybe if air gets too much polluted, the best way to salve the world is getting out of it. But you don't think Star Wars is a good example of it, because it is not. What we will have is a way more civilizated departure, goodbye to the animals and plants and hello to the aliens. After all, they will be our best friends. In a new planet, two rational beings think better than just one. Share a world with aliens means live in the planet for all eternity.
Of course, I mean, if we find a planet with life…
