First off, I would like to thank you soo much for this site. It has been extremely helpful to me in the past couple of months. It is refreshing to get some real science explained to ease some unnecessary anxiety that has been created due to the buzz of the upcoming "apocalypse"…

Anyhow, I feel comfortable with everything you have debunked that I have read thus far. My main issue with the whole 2012 thing has been the buzz surrounding Comet Elenin and the so called relationships between this comet and the earthquakes. I understand that there are many earthquakes every day and anyone would be hard pressed using real science to blame Elenin for the quakes. However, I have found myself checking the USGS site every now and then just to see how everything is going. The only thing that has me a little concerned is the recent activity of 6-6.9 magnitude quakes. The yearly average for these quakes is sitting at 134. However we have already had about 130 and it is only May.

Your takes on this please. I should probably not worry about this, but I am a little concerned.

Most are aftershocks from bigger earthquakes and if you read the website it tells you that, it also tells that earthquakes come in sets making multiple ones. It is just how the year is and we also have more seismographs to accurately read and tell us what the level was. In the 80's and 90's we didn't have that so they were usually read lower because they were not picked up by all seismographs.

Today we have about 2500 to 3000 and in the 20th century we started out with 300….

Also beware microtrending: taking trends from small data sets to establish a greater picture. It's terribly inconclusive.

The BIGGER story with earthquakes is this: What 2012 threat are they PROVEN to be related to? Any? Unless there is a solid link between a threat and earthquakes, talking about trends in earthquakes is really quite irrelevant.

Hi Southpaw,
There is no relationship between comet Elenin and earthquakes. Elenin is a very small comet that is very far away. It has no effect on us whatever. Silly stories like that are told by people who don't know the facts about Elenin and don't understand how gravity works. A tiny object many millions of miles away doesn't exert any measurable gravitational force on Earth. That's like saying that a gnat 50 miles away could exert a gravitational pull on a Mack truck.
As far as the average for 6.0 to 6.9 magnitude quakes, an average is a calculation that is going to have around half the values above it and half of them below. Also, a great many of these were aftershocks of the Japan quake. You don't need to worry about this.

Thanks Timmy. I just noticed that a huge percentage of those 6 mag quakes were aftershocks on and around 3/11 from the big one that hit Japan.
