Object behind the sun - is it possible?

I saw an interview about Lars von Trier's new movie called "Melancholia". I guess you're all familiar with it, but if not it's a movie about a planet behind the sun, heading towards earth.

So about the interview, there was a scientist who's very well known here in Denmark, she even has her own TV show. Anyways, she claimed that an object behind the sun, could possible be hiding there, and it would take about a month before astronomers would see it, and not before then know if it would hit earth or not. So one month warning is all we would have. Does this claim hold any truth? Is it really possible for a planet to hide behind the sun, and not letting us know before it was 1 month away? I thought astronomers had an full view around the sun, dont they?

I think i've said it before but yes, Nibiru is about the only thing in the whole 2012 circus that makes sense in my head. Please help me calm down about this one.

No.

Countless probe sent to the inner planets would have gone AWOL and never reached their destination had another unknown planet been there, even some observations actively looking for objects near the Sun haven't found anything of significance, probes sent the other direction haven't see anything looking back, and then of course the good old STEREO mission gave us a 360deg view of the Sun, and were in a position to see anything 'behind' the Sun larger than 100km in diameter, maybe even 50km, and they've seen diddlysquat.

How exactly would an object not be observed by astronomers before it gets behind the sun? How would it get there in the first place?
No there is no magically trajectory that would be able to sneak up behind the Sun and the magically pops up hits Earth.

You really should check the Nibiru page on the left, aswell as the Nibiru thread. The people here have already made mention of the effects on the orbits of other planets in our solar system that such an object would have.

If there was something there, then it wouldn't have gone unnoticed. It couldn't go unnoticed.

Oh can we view the sun 360 degrees and observes everything around it including whatever is behind the sun?

Not quite as simple as that, no, but browsing the various websites for the STEREO mission will fill you in.

The reason it's note quite as simple is that the whole idea of those spacecraft isn't to look behind the sun, but to look at it. Seeing what's behind the sun is in a sense like seeing something out of the corner of your eye, you know if somethings there or not but you don't really care, because your focus is on what's in front of your eye.

Be forewarned though, there are bucketloads of wild claims made about those spacecraft, as usual there is nothing to those claims, most of which are talked about on our page about YouTube.

It would be the ultimate game of cosmic peek-a-boo. Even if it were "behind" the Sun relative to where we are at a particular time, it would not have always been there, and we still have to consider little details like gravity.
