It says here that the mayans didn't predict anything, but i've heard from a few sources now that the mayans anticipated earthquakes at the end of the fifth cycle of the calendar, which ends in 2012.

also, in an episode guide of a NatGeo documentary:

what's this based on? what are the mayan prophecies, and where do they come from?

Huh? Where are you getting your information from? Its all very wrong.

The cycle ideas are Aztec. And it has nothing to do with the long count calendar. This being the 5th cycle makes no sense, since the long count calendar has been counting days since their creation date from the time they created the calendar.

Who foresaw this? The Maya surely didn't. How would they know of any war, or tsunami? Thats just insane. You have a lot to learn.

These are the kinds of posts that really irk me. Everything that was said is in complete contradiction to the evidence, and people accept it just because it sounds exciting or scary. I used to be like this, but I did the work to fix it. I've seen very few that come here, that actually take the time to learn something.

To be fair I have actualy saw this claim on the show in question, of coarse, it's a claim designed to get you a bit freaked out so you will tune into the drivel.

Go here for opinions from actual scholars of the Maya to see what they actually think about it. You may be surprised.

If you look at predictions, then you will notice that they FAIL to predict stuff that would be even more worth-full of predicting BEFORE it happens. And even what they do predict is just so fuzzy and vague that it could mean anything.

All predictions that would be called worthy as a prediction like: In 21 May 2011 at 06h00 the world will feel a massive Earth quake worldwide, and rapture starts ALL fail.

I think they're showing whatever they think will gain more viewers, regardless of whether it contradicts their supposed stance.

The earthquakes thing comes from a documentary called what the ancients did for us by adam hart davis, and a kids book that i happen to have read called the angry aztecs by terry deary. both of them tend to get their facts right, so i was just wondering if you were aware of it, or where it comes from. but i think the 2012 rumour had been floating around before then, and maybe they just picked up on some of the misinformation that came with it. Thank you for your help.

You can't mix Aztec and Maya. They were two different cultures. Aztec's were very warrior like, with little interest in sciences. Maya were more about science, and weren't much about war. The Aztec calendar cycles ever 52 years. The next time it cycles is in 2027. It doesn't match up with the long count at all. I believe the long count was created way before the Aztec culture even started.

The earthquakes thing isn't what I was disputing. I was disputing the fact that it has nothing to do with 2012 or the long count. I think they said their 1st world was destroyed by jaguars or something similarly ridiculous. Do you believe that as well?

The Aztec calendar cycles ever 52 years. The next time it cycles is in 2027.

Oh, and just warning the doomsayers. There may be another end-of-the-world prediction for 2027. They will forget that it's a 52-year cycle. Last time it reached the cycle was 1975. The world didn't end.
Eddie, everyone said what you need to know about the Maya/Aztec. Both didn't say anything about the end of the world (at least didn't give any exact date). The "documentaries" in the History Channel/Natgeo are just false and are there to scare the people like you. Just avoid them if you don't want to get worried.
