Found this interesting article on Yahoo this morning. While this phenomenon is horrible and paranoid driven, I can't help to be a little fascinated at the way people are reacting. This seems to be causing disturbances in this "once" low populated area. I expect to see many more "safe zones" being populated as the "apocalypse" draws near.

It really is sad to see the vulnerable go to these lengths. Too bad we can't broadcast this site over the airways as well. Many people are going to feel pretty silly come 2013, I just hope that nothing too crazy happens in the meantime.

Yes, this has cropped up on a couple of threads in this forum, originally last year. It seems to have undergone a revival in the news in the last few days because of an investigation by the French watchdog Miviludes.

Alerted to an influx of visitors by the mayor of Bugarach, Fenech said he recently visited the area, and found six settlements in the surrounding countryside set up by members of the American Ramtha School of Enlightenment.

Other "gurus" and messianic groups have been organising fee-paying conferences at local hotels, according to Fenech. "This is big business," he told Reuters.

As is so frequently brought to our attention on 2012hoax.org, the people who believe in this sort of thing are easy targets to be ripped off by a bunch of scammers and crooks. With any luck, the French authorities will run them out of town.

The annual report of Miviludes for 2010 was published on June 15th, which is why it's in the news now. The report can be found here. For anyone who can read French, it contains a lengthy section on 2012. I don't know if there's a translation available.
In the meantime, paragraphs could be copied and pasted into Google translate.

I'm French Canadian (which could explain the weird phrasing at times). I'll definitely read it and try to resume it here.

It's disheartening to see that so many people are falling for the 2012 nonsense. I was particularly disappointed that the author of the article never once indicated that the supposed doomsday is false.

They are making money off of it. People are getting scared and falling for this hoax. But I don't know what else we can do, other than debunking all the claims. :-(
I just hope they will realize that what they are doing is not worthy.
