I'm a seventeen year old. I used to worry a ton about 2012. I would cry myself to sleep and constantly wonder why God would do something like the 2012 proponents say "will happen". This site helps immensely and I visit it almost daily! Thank you so much for putting it up! Now I have a friend who's absolutely convinced that the rapture is soon because of all of the weird stuff that's going on (natural disasters and weather). She doesn't say 2012, but she's linked to a website on her facebook that claims that this year is the year. The person apparently can hear God's voice and He says that we "cannot know the day or the hour, but we can know the season." I've actually had to hide her facebook because what she says freaks me out so much and I hate doing that because she's so sweet in person. She actually tagged me in a note a little while ago that says many will be left behind, but I've finally removed it from my wall. I know that I have nothing to fear, but I can't help it. I've presented some of your evidence to her (like the fact that earthquakes are not really on the rise, though this year they seem to be occurring more…) and she doesn't believe it. I'm ashamed to say that she's actually convincing me…I just want to say thanks for eradicating my 2012 fear and allowing me to move onto another fear that (however irrational) is slightly more pleasant than being blown off of the earth. :D

I feel you. I was about the same age when I'd heard that the apocalypse was going to begin in May of '03 when Nibiru arrived. Nobody, especially children and teenagers, should have to go through that kind of psychological torture.

"Hearing God's voice" is not a good sign.

Did she know how much this stuff bothers you at the time she posted that? If so, she's being psychologically abusive, no matter how "sweet" she is otherwise. You should tell her how this kind of thing is a trigger for anxiety. If she doesn't take a hint and shut up about it, drop her like a hot potato because she's psychologically abusing you.

It sounds like she's pretty deep into this stuff, then. She might come to when the earth fails to end on December 21st, 2012 - but it's more likely she'll revise her beliefs and decide something invisible happened, or that they miscalculated, or anything that doesn't involve admitting she was wrong.
I'm ashamed to say that she's actually convincing me…
There's nothing to be ashamed of. I assume based on what you've written that you've had a religious upbringing, possibly Christian. Christianity is an apocalyptic religion, and in many cases you have it drilled into your head from the time you're a very small child that the world is going to end sometime soon, if not any minute now. People who are brought up in this kind of environment are programmed to believe in this type of thing, and are therefore more easily triggered by it. Even if a person rationally knows how ridiculous it all is, programming that goes back that far is extremely difficult to overcome.
When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
I guarantee you she get's her thoughts from technology like you said. The reason many people think that besides the fact that they've been taught the end is nigh since there childhood, is the fact that we can know about natural disasters easier as in we know how many happen. 50 years ago you had almost no idea what was happening in Indonesia or Egypt or something like that, it's just that times are changing.
People who say the end is near do not understand what the Bible talks about, they try to pick verses from the Bible and incorporate them into our times today, which is in my opinion a sin because it's not truly the word of God. They take the verse out of context to promote there ideas and books and people ignorant enough to follow them do not understand scripture themselves.
I'm sorry for the religious essay if that offends anyone.
Hello Kelly,
Now I have a friend who's absolutely convinced that the rapture is soon because of all of the weird stuff that's going on (natural disasters and weather).
How can she be convinced after the Harold Camping fiasco? She is doing the exact same thing as Harold Camping and the end result will be the exact same thing: nothing happens.
Also it is very hard to believe that a loving god would torture people.
You know if I were a religious person and believed in rapture, then I would choose to stay behind because many people will need my help that could not get up in heaven. I would feel so bad to be in heaven having fun while other are having a hard time.
The person apparently can hear God's voice
This is not a good sign, she need specialized medical help.

Oh, easy. Harold Camping was a fraud, but her sources are totally the real deal.
Of course that's just a guess, but in my experience that's how these things usually go down.

Since the world is still here, that's how it always goes down.
Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm a Christian. My entire family is. My parents are both Christians and don't believe in what my friend says, but I can't help being a little freaked out. You all helped a lot! I just want to say thanks for all that you do on this website :D

I'm pretty good at staying off of them, but I know how easy it is to get curious and just click the link. Back in March, there were "Bible Prophecy Seminar" billboards (which I've been told not to worry about-they've been doing them for years!) and even though I knew what looking at them would entail, I still glimpsed at them every time I drove past them. My aforementioned super-sweet, but rapture-obsessed friend also posted a link that sorta started the paranoia back in December and I just HAD to click on it… Since then, I've stayed off of her facebook page, but it's so tempting to click on it. She also wants to hang out sometime (she graduated in June and I still have a year to go). I'll make ya a deal-if you'll stay off of the woo sites, I'll keep from clicking on her fb page and if we hang out, I'll try and steer our conversations away from the end times stuff. Deal? :D
Actually to get over my fears I had to go back to the sites that scared me the most, dissect them and realize what tricks and such they pulled and it relieved me right away. I also have a rapture obsessed fan boy and I asked him why do you believe it? He said what everyone else said, look at today's news and I realized it was all lies. One of the worst things you can do is take the Bible out of context, contort it to the news of today and spread it. It's toxic, and it's what every nut job does.
Thats a cool way Nighthawk.

That is really cool! I stumbled upon Ghanaword and End-Times-Prophecy.com/org/something (I'm NOT going back to find out-and if any of you are as gullible as me, please DON'T) in looking up the note she tagged me in. Sadly, that was before I read your post. Speaking of said note, I just untagged myself from the note-which is sorta freedom in a sense that I don't have to look at it! I kept up with my end, which means you better keep up with your end, Awesomee :). Anyway, Religious predictions for something like the rapture seem pretty difficult to debunk (especially from a Christian perspective) seeing as they deal primarily with abstract concepts (unexplained increase in disasters vs. the more concrete (though nonexistent) Planet X). That's been my struggle. Thanks for the idea, Nighthawk! Wow, I write long posts…
