ok so the quakes between 6,0-9,9 have been record this year 177 this year and 149 last year and only 119 2009 for example and the small onces was more last year , for example 2008 it was 23.980 and 2011 9506 , but to remmber the year is not over jet :) so it must be some reason the big ones is more ? :)
The larger one quake is, the larger it's aftershocks tend to be. A certain Magnitude 9 quake we are all too aware of has managed aftershocks as high as Magnitude 7 months after the main shock took place. There have been 60 aftershock quakes above Magnitude 6 from the main Japanese quake alone. Sixty. So if we've got figures of 177 for this year so far, and sixty of which were largely thanks to another earthquake having occurred beforehand, you can get an idea of why those figures are high.
As the article - briefly it seems - mentions, sheer numbers are not enough to make a case for things going down so to speak. Having a record number of this or that means you've set a record. Well done. Having a year on year increase, now that's worth talking about. Do we have such an increase? Nope.
USGS Stats link looks pretty normal to me… but then again could be supplying dis-info…. yeah right
No rise in Earthquakes and this comes from the people the record the data.
Oh wait this is a goverment cover up isn't it, with HAARP and all that… next please
I see stupid people…
You are absolutelly not supplying dis-info, although the second link in your post is rather outdated in the context (just saying). But just as Elliot pointed out, records are meant to be broken and thus are bound to be broken any given year. This year just happens to be one of them. Worth noting is that EQ-recording is a rather new phenomena , and thus statistics now are pretty much useless (because we simply have recordings from to few years to be able to add it up to something really usefull seen in an historical context).
Facts are stubborn things.

sorry pedro t I just checked the usgs site this is what I found, 2009 quakes 161 not 119 and last year there were 173 not 149 quakes (6-9.9 magnitude), rscord quakes this year, not quite yet in 2007 there were 196. I'll give you that it prob will be the highest since 2000 as we know that a,magnitude 6-6.9 occur approx every 3.5 days, but dont you think you should independantly verify facts before posting them -
sorry , im was going on a trap on this one , once again im sorry
