what is it? it got moved one minute closer to midnight? :(
The operative question is: "Why should I care?" Answer honestly, and I doubt you'll find anything that even looks like a good reason.
Really, you had to be digging around in the strangest of places to stumble across that news.
Really, you had to be digging around in the strangest of places to stumble across that news.
I know, the BBC had it listed as Asian news, of all topics.
In all seriousness though it's a trending story on Yahoo, it's one of the headlines for the Daily Mail… places that we typically find people reading have covered it to some extent. I found out about it through the RSS feeds of PhysOrg and i09, which highlight how it's covered by groups with somewhat of an interest - 'oh, by the way, Doomsday Clock a minute closer, now for some glow in the dark cats and TV spoilers'.
Heck, even Yahoo only seem to mention it in passing, contrasted with the Daily Mail's imagery of mushroom clouds and world dictators. It wouldn't take much effort to have seen this headline as a link somewhere, before even bothering to read it.
honestly what a load of garbage if its been going since 1947,where exactly is the clock kept?anyway as the great juju said who really cares who really has time for that nonsense.sorry everyone but it really means nothing if that scares you then you better remove all the timepieces from sight
Where is a symbolic clock kept? Nowhere, it's a concept.
The Doomsday Clock was created by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1947 as an estimation as to how close the world was to doomsday. On January 10, 2012, the clock was moved one minute forward, its new position being five minutes to midnight.
However, it is simply a symbolic clock representing the opinions of a small group of scientists. It is by no means a concrete warning of any kind of catastrophe. It's the fears of scientists turned into policy, nothing more, nothing less. I think Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen comic book summed it up best:
I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as photograph of oxygen to a drowning man.
Im starting to think Yahoo! is on the path towards doomedree. This nuclear war crap is also getting out of hand they keep mentioning Russia and Iran each time geez, they should just stick to Justin Beiber and the Kardashians. :l
I doubt the actual physical timepiece exists, it is just a concept directly related to nuclear threats. Even if the 'clock' reached midnight, nothing would happen. My guess is it stems from the cold war, where there was a lot of fear about nuclear war between Russia and the US. You're much more likely to die in a car crash than anything fortold my a mythical timepiece.
The Doomsday Clock isn't an actual timepiece. It's just a symbolic clockface created in 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. They set the time according to how they see world events at the time. There is a good page on Wikipedia that tells all about it and where it has been set every year since it was created.
Is it accurate?
Or are they just trying to play god.
What do you mean by accurate? It is set by them according to current world events, mainly it appears by the nuclear arms situation in the world. The reason it was set forward recently is because of the tensions between certain countries in the world at the moment. It is as accurate as their opinions on what is going on in the world, but that is about it.
“In all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane.” - Oscar Wilde
I wouldn't suggest setting your watch to it. However, it is accurate in determining the perceived threat the owners feel.
