I know that the Mayans are namly the main example for all of the 2012 hype but I was just wondering why this all started…I first saw this on the history channel but they mainly talked of nostradamus …but I was just curious as to when the actual doomsday ctalk for 2012 came about.
Hi mommyof2,
First off, neither Nostradamus nor the Maya predicted anything to happen in 2012. In fact, both Nostradamus and the Maya had predictions far in the future. I believe it was 4772 for a Mayan celebration that is to take place, and 3790 for a Nostradamus prediction. So it's clear that none of them expected the world to end in 2012.
Back in the 60's, Michael Coe, in a book about the Maya, speculated that ,if the thought the world began at the start of this long count in 3114 BC, maybe they thought it would end at the end of it.
Jose Arguelles, an art historian who thought he was the only one who could interpret the Mayan calendar, decided that it was ending on December 21, 2012. No one really started trying to make it a doomsday date until Nancy Lieder (who hears aliens in her head and gets messages from them in boxes of candy) needed a new date for her end of the world after it didn't happen in May, 2003. She also wanted to jazz up her Planet X story for the new doomsday, so she hijacked Zecharia Sitchen's fake planet Nibiru. He was another one like Arguelles, only he was an economist who thought he could interpret ancient Sumerian. He mistook their reference to the planet Jupiter, which they called Nibiru, for an additional planet. Then he made up this story about it having inhabitants and this impossible 3600 year orbit. His claim though, was that it would come back in 2085. Since it was all fake anyway, and Nancy doesn't worry about a little thing like facts either, Nibiru was added to her 2012 fantasy.
It's all a big money maker and certainly nothing to be taken seriously.
Is Lieder actually claiming that Nibiru's going to come in 2012? From all I've seen, the 2012 Nibiru nonsense is coming from people who got worked up about it back in the early 00's and are still convinced that it really is coming any ol' time now.
When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Thanks for clearing that up…does nancy Lieder believe that we all come from a Star family…this wad something i heard from a,woman who claimed to communicate telepathically with extraterrestrials ….which in itself is laughable..just curious
Is Lieder actually claiming that Nibiru's going to come in 2012?
Lieder actually refers to Planet X, but having had her fingers well and truly burnt by it failing to return at the end of May 2003 as she said it would, she doesn't actually give a date. She has a 'timeline' of events leading up to her pole shift, starting with 'Planet X visible', then 'severe Earth wobble' followed by '3 days of darkness' in the third week and so on. No starting date for this timeline is given, so as 2012 draws to a close with none of these events happening (but not affecting the ludicrous and imaginary Sun/Moon setting too far north/south claims of her followers), we can expect this silliness to be extended in 2013 and beyond, with every significant earthquake or weather event blamed on the still approaching and still invisible Planet X.
A more detailed account of this nonsense can be found here.
I actually freaked out about the sun setting too far north or south, and then looked up seasons and where the sun sets during each season. It calmed me down. lol.
Its just crazy to me how one person could have that much influence over a lot of people..I just wish people would deeply investigate all claims thar are supposadly backd by scientific evidence then they wld see its nothing more than pseudoscience garbage and crackpot nonsense
I can't find her actually saying anything, only others quoting her as saying that her Planet X is indeed the Twelfth Planet. I have found statements saying that she changed from Planet X to Nibiru after her May 2003 doomsday, but haven't found direct statements from her.
The Mayan's would never have choose 21 dec 2012 as an end, since it is astronomical the most boring the they could choose. No alignment whatsoever not even the moon is new or full.
I bet that they just took a date that had some cool sounding numbers, close enough to make a hoax but far enough not to get caught when they came up with the claim. They probably would have preferred 21 dec 2112, but no one would be interested in buying survival packages so they had to move it to 2012 as the next best things.
All that date is… is with is the winter solstice, nothing more, nothing less. Most christians don't realsie it but celebrate it with christmas on the 25th a pagan tradition hence the tree and the decorations etc The rebirth of the sun… (and the bible even says not to do it but here we are) simply change it to the birth of christ and claim it has nothing to do with the solstice and all is good.
The winter solstice celebration that developed throughout history (over 10,000 years) of much of the inhabited world has been handed down as "Christmas," i.e., December 25th, the birthday of the "sun of God." "Christmas" is thus an extremely ancient celebration, predating the Christian era by many millennia.
I see stupid people…
Oh .. and by the way, where I live it's actually the summer solstice on Dec 21! (True!)
It's the time of the year when the Sun starts to move back towards the equator, and not the "rebirth of the sun" like in the Northern Hemisphere.
I guess it's another example of the Middle East people (thousands of years ago) not knowing that the world was/is a lot larger than they assumed, and not flat! They would have been amazed if they had been told that when the Sun was in rebirth where they are it was actually in decline in the other half of the world. So the "rebirth" would have been somewhat less significant.
(Btw, at the moment we're having a great fall/autumn in NZ. It's like the summer we never had!)

Same here… !!
doh that cause you live in the same city as me lol
I see stupid people…
@NighthawkNZ … Greetings! It's the "best little city" usually, and the weather isn't as bad as some people say. Lower rainfall than other NZ cities for a start. I've been here since 1965 (that dates me!) .. my parents 'dragged' me here from Yorkshire (UK) on the other side of the world. You can't get much further away from the UK unless you leave the surface of the Earth!
@Alene Y … It's a small world! Lots of young kiwis go traveling for their Overseas Experience (OE). Many base themselves in London (UK). … Enjoy your spring!

I didn't realize that was a common practice, but Graeme came to the US and worked for six months, then went back home.
As a side note, he did become a hero while he was here. He and another man saw a mobile home on fire. There were two or three small children inside who couldn't get out. Since they couldn't get to the kids through the door, he and the other man tore a hole through the wall of the trailer and saved them. This was even more amazing because they must have worked impossibly fast. Mobile homes burn down completely in a matter of minutes.
