I use yahoo for email and this story came up about Julia-Levy's Mayan documentary. It starts off saying "Mayan writings do not predict the end of the world when the calendar cycle ends in December - but according to the producer of an upcoming documentary about the Central American civilization, they do make the sobering prediction that three-quarters of the earth's population will be wiped out in the ensuing 15 to 20 years." It also mentions that if we want to survive we have to colonize to other planets just like the Mayans did! Levy goes on to say "And according to the Mayan Council, archaeologists have been lying to the world and covering things up. They don't know how to read the Mayan codices, and they don't know what the Mayan Council knows." This is just ridiculous, who is Julia-Levy? I never heard of him before at all. Is there any good info around that will prove that he is a nut just like John Major Jenkins? I would post the link if I could, this guy sounds like a real goober though.

I've heard of this Mayan Council before, and they play the same old game most of the 2012ers play. "Oh, we know stuff science doesn't know, or purposely covers up." It's usually something along those lines. Of course, they don't publish through scholarly outlets, for fear of having their work read, and torn up, by qualified scholars who know the material well enough to point out the inconsistencies. Instead, these claims are put to people like you and me. If you haven't seem me say so before, ancient languages are the worst evidence to present, because you are no longer even assured the translation is right. It becomes basically a free lunch ticket for dishonest claims.

Put simply, the reason so much in nutter-land is supposedly derived from 'the ancients' isn't because our ancestors were so well informed. It's because it is harder to check, and that helps make the claim unfalsifyable.

However, some things I can check. They go and say Steven Hawking said this:*

I warn humanity that aliens are out there. Just because the aliens were friends with the Mayans doesn't mean they are our friends. Humans should avoid contact with aliens at all costs.

So, I did the thing believers are NOT SUPPOSED TO DO. I checked. Every single use of this phrase a search engine brought me was in reference to the story about the documentary. But if Steven Hawking really said this amazing thing, there should be references to it predating the documentary. But there aren't. Now I wouldn't be surprised that this is based on a cautionary statement Hawking gave about the potential consequences of humanity encountering intelligent alien life, but that doesn't change the point that the quote is clearly fabricated or altered to fit the 'documentary' needs of Julia-Levy.

And of course, it's Argument from Authority. And worse than that, Hawking isn't a noted authority on the Maya, so it's arguing from FALSE authority.

So, short form: Julia-Levy plays a well known, tired old hand with no more tact or grace than any of the others we've seen before. It's almost assured his 'work' is garbage.

• Edit: Re-read the article, and they seem to be implying that this will be the first iteration of this phrase by Hawking. We shall see. I find it rather unlikely, and remind the Argument from Authority issue is still critical.

I hope you do understand that Yahoo! News is quite often sensationalistic. They make articles for innocent people who go there everyday only to read the emails and are faced with a huge amount of B.S.

Where? According to much more serious researches, the Maya left only 1 referrence to 2012 in their writings. And it's not about the end-of-the-world.

It would make sense, if something were really about to happen.

just as he said the Mayans did.

He has to prove he knows something we don't know about the Maya. Something he didn't do until now. Where is the evidence?

Yes. Archaeologists that studied for years the mayan codices cannot read them. Doesn't it sound a bit stupid to you? By the way, I wanted to know if this "Mayan Council" is a team of well-trained archaeologists and scientists and not a bunch of fearmongers. Oh, wait, it is a group of fearmongers.
