Please calm down. It was a computer/ server/ human error. Please remember they are both based in Ireland so anything could have effected them. My electricity did flicker a bit on Monday, if I remember correctly. (I am also in Ireland)

It's a sign that computers and networking equipment occasionally fail. Good thing, too, because fixing them is how I make my living.

Monday was a major shopping day before Christmas, so the load going through a lot of the servers for online shopping would've been greater than normal too. Also remember programmers are humans too. Well most of us are.

On Monday, Google's Gmail service and Facebook both experienced short outages, but the two events were unrelated. Google said its outage was caused by a misconfigured server, and Facebook blamed DNS problems for its downtime.

Technical issues in both cases, and things that are very common. Both are back and working fine.

Not a sign of anything worse, because there's no "worse" for it to be a sign of.

No. It is a "sign" of too much traffic going through the servers at one time. Gmail is highly popular, and so is FB, although I cannot figure out for the life of me why.

what worries me most is that i read an astrologer say that 12-12-12 was goin to be dificult day for internet. 2 days befor that Facebook and gmail crashed!! two days before the triple 12.!!
two different problems at a same day!

They went down on December 10th, two days before December 12th.

two different problems at a same day!

Two human problems at a same day. Human errors cannot be predicted by astrology and stars do not affect technology.

Well I myself surely failed to notice that they were down. Both sites have been working just fine for me.

Technical glitches do happen. I've experienced my internet connection being down for two days. Same with my TV channels at another time - nothing but "weak signal" and no picture and/or sound on every channel. Just a few days ago half of my TV channels were down.

Gmail not working for some time? Facebook not working for some time? Twitter not working for some time? Is it really a big deal if they don't work all the time?

Gmail started in 2004. Yet people send e-mail to each other happily even before that.

Facebook was launched as a restricted service in 2004 (not everyone could just join in), and it became generally available in 2006. Twitter also started just in 2006. Yet people were happily communicating with each other long before anybody had even heard about these particular sites.
