i mean seriously how come when doom and gloom people make up doomsday claims, they think the U.S.A is the whole world? they obviously have been falling asleep in science class or something. i mean, look when its December 20th here in good old America, its already the 21st in japan. :) and if you go on www.earthcam.net and look at the webcams around the world, you can see nothing strange will be happening. :) because when the Mayans were around, they didn't know about the rest of the world, or about time zones. and they never predicted the end of the world, (obviously) because a lot of kids from Guatemala at my school are fed up with the whole doomsday thing. there actually complaining to the school counselors. so when its dec 20th in America, it will be the 21st in japan. :D so just go on earthcam and type Tokyo and go to the Tokyo cam and look for yourself. :) i did that when Harold camping predicted the rapture on oct 21st. nothing unusual at all. :) happy holidays.

This. It is not just the different time zones thing. The doom and gloom people also claim that "the government" (meaning the government of the United States of America) and NASA are "hiding" Nibiru.
They forget that
a) the U.S. government does not actually control the whole planet
b) NASA does not control other countries scientists and/or space research. Some countries even have their // very own// space agencies! I know, like who would imagine?! *sarcasm* Plus, space agencies are not the only ones researching space.
c) "hiding" a planet is… well, impossible.
One's convictions should be proportional to one's evidence. - Sam Harris
Not to be a jerk or anything, but the most common of times being blurted out is 11:11 GMT so, yes the time zone thing is covered.
Wow! The mayans knew about GMT? Who would have expected that?
Is it bed time for UK when America is awake?

So the Maya knew about Greenwich Mean Time now… who knew…. who would of thought???
The Spanish were there since the early 1511 and took nearly 2 centuries until 1697 to subdue the Maya.
Greenwich Mean Time was established in 1675.
I see stupid people…
Well with all the panic in Russia and China the people must be lying to them. Why 11:11 GMT what does GMT mean anyway? And what time would that be in Pacific standard Time?
what does GMT mean anyway?
Greenwich Mean Time. The time in London basically, ignoring daylight savings adjustments.
PST is GMT-8. so 3:11am.
Hear the music before the song is over…
Tee hee. So in other words, when I wake up on Friday morning, the non event will have already came and went? I will sleep through nothing happening? Damn!
ROFL
Ok. :) ill be asleep but ill wait. Then I can get up and say nothing happened. And finish up my school finals. And then get into the holidays.
Doomsday nutters and conspiracy cranks are fascinated by the number eleven. For example, they were predicting all kinds of death and destruction to occur last year, on 11/11/11.
The time they've given for the non-doomsday on Dec 21st for 11:11 (apart from not saying which time zone that would be) is just something they've invented and added on because they think it sounds scary. It's all a load of tripe, of course.

One thing about time zones.
The ancient prime meridian was apparently at Giza, in Egypt, as near as anyone can tell. HOWEVER, if one does a bit of research on the location of the prime meridian, one will discover that it has changed many, many times over the centuries. It was also different across cultures, and even if contemporary cultures were familiar with calculating longitude, their prime meridians were very often different.
Additionally, TIME IS ARBITRARY. Time is also a product of culture. Different cultures have different conceptions of time (as portrayed by the Mayan Long Count Calendar and its ba'k'tuns). In America, we had a different calendar in place when George Washinton was born. Later, the current calendar was adopted for general use, and is off from the original one used by colonial Americans by about a month or so (forgive me if I'm wrong on the date; it's been a while). In other words, December 21st has already come and gone according to the early American calendar, folks! :) I do not think I need to remind people that in the Western world civilizations we have chosen to mark our years from year 0—in other words, the birth of Christ. We are currently roughly 2012 years from his birth. Compare that to the Islamic calendar, which is several hundred years off numerical wise compared with our calendar (i.e. same concept in marking time from the beginnings of a religious prophet as the Christian calendar does, but they have different time keeping methods as they adhere to different years for the start of their calendar).
Think of this loophole the next time you need to poke holes in the concept of the Mayan Doomsday crap. Also, ask them if they remember what happened with the Y2K doomsday crap. ;=)
Indeed. And the Ethiopian calendar says it's 2005. ;) Maybe the doomsdayers will suddenly say "oh my gosh… we were referring to the Ethiopian calendar, not the gregorian one!"
Again…not to be a dick, but your condescending statements directed at me don't exactly hold water. The Mayan Calendar was 'deciphered' by archaeologists, scholars, scientists or what have you…who took into account such things as leap year. It's not like the calendar says "I end at 11:11 GMT." Don't be stupid.
I don't think they were directed at you because all you did was mention a crank claim from doomtards about 11:11. My comment certainly wasn't anyway.
Pobody's nerfect
so when does the mayan calendar begin a new cycle on friday?
The cycle has already began it was Monday the 10th not the 21St to use this site and it's references as key.
uuuhh… i did not know that. :I i always thought it started on dec 21st. but one thing, where did you hear that it already began? just asking. :)

Don, Andrea does a great job putting the Mayan stuff into perspective. Check out her comments, above is one, but she has several pertaining to this
Actually, the reasoning behind the 11:11 GMT time was, as far as I know, because that was the original time that was given to the winter solstice. So there is a reason for it, whether it's a good one or not.
