As we lay this hoax to rest, we have to hope that we've made enough of a difference to the lives of affected people to justify the effort we put into this site. I think we did and am reminded of a different online experience, where I worked as a poetry judge for a year and a half, posting a new contest every week with the help of a few other regulars. After a few months, we added a new judge, one of the youngsters that began submitting poems from the beginning. He had shown such great progress that after only a few months, he was good enough to help out choosing new winners, and of course, helping the "non-winners" to improve.
I think about this sometimes when I see people that came to this site bothered by the 2012 hoax and after only a short while, became regular contributors, helping other people with similar fears. THAT is my answer when I ask "Did we make a difference?"
