There was an asteroid that almost hit the Earth about a week ago. Is that what the Mayans thought was the cataclysm for the Earth?

No. How could the Maya have predicted an asteroid passing earth hundreds of years in advance? Not to mention the fact that the Maya never actually predicted any cataclysm at all. Learn to think critically.
The great thing about science is, it's true whether you believe in it or not.
It appears that reality have not yet set in to you that everything that the 2012 hoaxer promoters told you was a fraud, a lie, just for laughs and a scam.
And some of these people are still promoting doom by shifting dates and still people falls for their lies.
Isn't there are group or organisation that is currently trying to track asteroids whose tragectories come close to earth, i remember watching a doco where they could predict the path of these asteroids and how close they may get. Kinda like an early warning systems i guess.

The MPC science data was published on Dec. 21 at 15:44 UT, the day after the [insignificant] rock's discovery. This is fairly standard.
Bears mentioning that, after 11 observations, 2012 YR1 sits at a Torino rating of 0.

From what I have read it wasn't that close at all. And yes it was in the news.
Either way, the Mayans never predicted anything and the sad thing is they will become scapegoats now.
guys it wasn't a secret. I read articles about that asteroid. They knew it was coming, and no.. it didn't almost hit earth, they were able to predict it's path and knew it wouldn't come close enough to earth to hit us.

the above is one of the articles from December 11th that we were talking about on another board. There were many other articles. this wasn't a secret except to conspiracy theorists who want it to be a secret.
BTW… NASA also released information that another Asteroid is going to be passing really close to earth in 2040… but predictions of the path show it will miss earth by a good distance. in fact it has a rating of 0 on the Torino scale, and was completely removed from the sentry risk table.
