Are people legitimately afraid still?

I wish I was a sociology major because the number of people that are afraid, concerned, or think the world actually went through some transformation is interesting. It would be a tremendously fascinating topic for sociologists to study. What is driving this? I mean, know there have been doom-Sayers in the past, but this seems to exceed all historical incidents and probably the first global one.

I think alot has to do with the internet, the internet is so popular now than it ever was before. So many more people have the internet now adays than before (1998/1999 "Y2K nonsense") You also have social media now, where everyone can spread their ideas and thoughts….and also, cable tv coverage (History and Nat Geo showing programs on this subject)

I got curious about this as well, so I quote here what I just read on an article, written just before May 21st, 2011, Camping's date for rapture:

One theory is that such precise predictions feed the human desire to know the unknown. It could simply be a way of trying to explain the world around us, or to give us hope, says DiTommaso: "Within its limitations, apocalypticism is very rational. It's a world view that explains time, space, and human existence. It's not science - it's not universal or repeatable - but it does explain things." DiTommaso also says that sociological studies have shown that people who tend to enjoy an apocalyptic world view also seem to be the kinds of people who seek out explanations of the world: "They tend to be quite intelligent compared with the general population but they are looking for answers for how life is the way it is, and whether there is a purpose.
