That argument may have a chance to turn out to be either wrong or harsh. For example, some works could be based on different knowledge, not relying on calendar at all.
Harsh judgement is against #31 of 42 Negative Confessions.

I'd rather recommend this old humble argument:
No scientific evidence exists (up to this date) for any impending unordinarity in 2012.

There is, of course, some list of things scientists are for now unable to foresee, - like unexpected mass nudity in North America (what does 'great transformation' originally mean?), - but I doubt that either anyone else could somehow know for sure when exactly such things could happen.

Maya could not have technical means to make forecasts much better than modern people have since the launch of Hubble Space Telescope, Astronomy Picture of the Day, SOHO, Near Earth Object Program, Telescopes in Education.

I was actually dumb enough to buy it. I like disaster movies and had no idea that it would be so bad that I'd likely never watch it again. I'm going to have to learn to not buy a DVD until I've seen it first. I think I've bought about 5 this year that really sucked.

Hi, Simon. I know how bad a relapse can be. Lord knows I had a few myself. Everything is going well, and then just the smallest thing would be enough to send me spiraling out of control again. It's normal in any sort of recovery. Be it chemical, psychological or physical (lord knows that every time I even SMELL someone smoking around me, I get tempted…).

Over the holidays, I took a "bull by the horns" approach and watched Knowing. While the movie was LAUGHABLY BAD, it's worth noting that there was a special feature on the disc that goes into a surprisingly rational, scientific discourse about the whole notion of Armageddon. The primary thrust of which, was that the whole concept of an "end of time" is almost purely a Western construct and perversion of traditional stories and myths. They further go on to state that 2012, specifically, is nothing more than the end of a calendar cycle, and that the Mayans never had any special designs for that date.

Most reassuring of all about this particular featurette? Every last one of the scientists interviewed seemed to be grinning and some on the verge of laughter at the whole notion of the end of the world occurring any sooner than 4,500,000,000 years in the future.

Four billion years from now? I'm gonna go ahead and file that under "not an issue."

Again, I went off topic, but hey…I'm just so good at it.

I believe I made a post about this a couple months back. As this site says, the Mayan calendar loses a day every four years. Over the entire cycle of the calendar, I can't remember my exact calculation, the Mayan calendar loses about 1200+ actual solar days. If whatever was meant to happen was supposed to happen in solar time, it would have happened in this past summer.

Miscalculated, sorry. Mayan calendar has 365 days in a year; Solar year has 365.25+ days; It means 1462 Mayan years are really 1461 Solar years.

The page Mayan Calendar on this site is useful.

Their calendar, amongs other things, proves that Mayans were quite far away from understanding how things really work. Looks much like those times when geocentric model of the world was preferrable.

With our modern Gregorian calendar, we may be sure that December 21 will be a winter day, be it in 2012 or 18000. But if you count days according to Julian calendar, the date December 21, 18000 falls right into middle of summer.

In Mayan calendar, synchronization with the Sun and seasons was so approximate, that calendar's winter slips into middle of summer by some 732 years! It means 1462 Mayan years are really 1463 Solar (factual) years. If we'd use Mayan calendar to celebrate Christmas, it could be in winter around 1800, then in spring around 2200, and then in summer around 2600.

Knowing this, will you admit that some ancient monk (zealot / priest) could with such a flawed understanding of nature be able to make predictions which come true to timing so precise, if to come at all?
People who state "yes, he certainly could!" either don't pay enough attention to the matter, or simply are not honest.

Hello again, Simon;

I see you've gotten some good responses so far. I just wanted to let you know that there is nothing abnormal about this situation at all.

We tend to take on the attitudes of people around us. This is what makes the "2012 hoax" so powerful in schools, is that it travels by word of mouth, and it is something that in some way appeals to kids, they tend to believe it.

When you are in a group of people who think "A is true", you may start out thinking "A is false" but after a few weeks of arguing with them, it somehow becomes easier to think "A is true" instead.

So, recognize that fact, and counter it. Realize that what you are feeling is normal psychologically.

In my opinion, "transformationists" and like "new age" followers are revealed for who they are by the language they use.

Whenever you read statements like: "Modern profane science is the degenerate descendant of an ancient sacred science that long ago perceived and embraced many dimensions of reality, including supra-sensory realms that lead into a higher integrative consciousness that is not anti-intellect, but transcends the intellect and is within reach of all human beings." (See the link on this site to John Major Jenkins) or a photo of the guy writing it with a "halo" effect from lighting techniques (see the picture of Mr. Jenkins), you know they are more full of themselves and enamored with their creative writing styles than science, fact or faith.

"Supra-sensory realms" and "higher integrative consciousness" indeed. That's "BS" - baloney sausage! He should have stuck to writing sappy greeting cards. He wouldn't have made as much money, but he would have done more good.

Don't let these 2012ers sidetrack you with fear. Remember the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Take a look at the wikipedia articles on the Mayan calendar, too. They never predicted the end of time, nor is the date on the calendar considered by the Mayans and their descendants to be the "end" of anything other than a cycle, whereupon a new cycle was to begin. In fact, the Mayans also believed the previous cycle before this one involved the creation of mankind made of wood. Sounds more like Pinocchio to me, no disrespect to the Mayans.

You are correct. While it is easy to immediately use real science to push aside any doomsday theory, these are a little more tricky. Jenkins is probably the least crazy of the bunch. But thoughts of a transformation remind me of astrology. If we pass on to another cycle of the zodiac does that mean everyone all of a sudden inherits the characteristics of whatever sign we pass in to? No.

Transformationists base their theories on less facts (if any facts) than the doomsday guys. And if the doomsday foundation in a bunch of crap, than what does that say about these theories.

Well it's nothing of the claims that are scareing me, it's more like ''Well what if it happens?'' ans such.

And when I look on the proponents list and read about there claims I get a bitt confusied about the whole 2012 subject. For example John Major Jenkins, he is an expert whitin Mayans and such and he claims that a transformation of some kind ill take place, how do we prove him wrong? And I picked him just as an example, my point is how do we prove all those claims from the proponents?

Always remember that the Mayans could have done nothing but use sight to mark objects and measure them. Therefore, predictions of a pole shift or crustal displacement or stormy sunspots just are not feasible and are a bunch of modern age pseudo crap. Mayans would have really had no way of knowing about these things.

As for planet X or nibiru, it could have been seen and tracked by the Mayans…if it existed, which no proof exists that it ever has.
_

Every calendar has its cycles, the completion of one piktun is rather meaningless. Think of milleniums, or centuries, or what have you for the Gregorian. The Zodiac calendar has its own 2150 year cycles. Finally, Hindu mythology identifies four states of the world, each as a cycle, etc… Nothing has happened before, nothing will happen again
_
Pseudoscience theories are based on way too many assumptions to even be feasible. Its a load of crap.
_

Happy holidays
