How many different cultures are doomsayers saying predicted something in 2012?

As many as they can scrape up.

The problem with the 'predictions' is that they are mostly non-existent (as in the "chinese" prediction, which is actually Terrence McKenna's wacky "timewave" stuff, completely modern, and based on someone's arrangement of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching system into a 'logical sequence') or they are completely benign (as in the Mayan 'prediction' which essentially is "this temple will still be in use in 2012")

As far as ancient cultures actually predicting catastrophic events for December 21st, 2012, the count is zero.

The Maya didn't disappear. Several million of their descendants still exist and preserve many old ways, primarily in the Central America region.

As for the history of their civilization and the Spanish conquest, maybe this article contains what you're looking for.

Just a quick history lesson for me. Why did Spain invade Maya again? Everybody treats the Maya like they just disappeared from existence.

Thank you for addressing these.

No problem.

I don't know, I am not an archeologist. I can only go by claims that archeologists make. I also don't know what they knew that we don't. Is it possible that they found something that could occur on a 5,126 year timescale?

Well, they could have done any number of things. If someone is going to make a specific claim about something like this, where is the supporting evidence?

Well, they had some names that I hadn't heard of before that they say are archeologists.

That entire article has a bad habit of name-dropping without any context, and most of the names are not impressive. Jenkins and Dmitriev, for instance (though at least Dmitriev is a scientist, just not an astrophysicist).

They do no debunking, but they also do no supporting of the claims.

It struck me as very supportive of 2012 claims, actually. Near the end it makes very brief mention of dissent from Susan Milbrath and Anthony Aveni, only to go out of its way to rebut them. Extreme attention is given to various 2012 claims, and almost no attention is given to the responses from scientists like David Morrison (they don't even mention Morrison, actually — wonder why?). Also, the sidebar links to the Mega-Disaster Planner: 2012 Survival Guide. In short, I think the journalistic integrity of that piece is bottom-rung.

Why have so many Egyptian researchers made claims that the ancient Egyptians have written text on the prohecies of 2012.

John Major Jenkins might fancy himself a researcher, but an Egyptian scholar he is not. I'm not aware of any Egyptian scholars who have made any such claim.

Look at the Geryl section, who may not know his science…but what is the references that he uses according to this site?

The Dresden Codex? It doesn't say what Geryl claims it says. There was a discussion about this a while back, and the Mayan Calendar page mentions it briefly.

Didn't ancient cultures make "end of world" prophecies as well?

Yep, thousands of them. All have failed, except the ones whose time we haven't reached yet, but I know of no reason to expect anything different.

Most of the Mayan codicies were destroyed, right?

Yes, many Mayan artifacts were eventually destroyed by the Spanish.

What if there was more to this story then what we have on record?

Well, if someone wants to let his imagination run wild and speculate about the nature of information that we don't have, then that's nothing I can help with. Again, I'm assuming you don't believe in Mayan gods. Even if we did have some reason to think the ancient Maya predicted a doomsday in 2012, what reason would you possibly have for taking it seriously?

I don't know much about the Hopi. I just know that the 2012 people talk about it like it is real, and it exists.

These "prophecies" appeared in the 1950s and have changed several times since. They aren't real. Even if they were, as with the Mayan religion, why would you believe any of it?

Thank you for addressing these.

Considering that it repeats many of the moronic claims refuted on this website, that's doubtful.

I think it may be a good idea to create a debunking of the periodic mass extinctions claims on this site…and list the ones that doomsayers say have a link with 2012.

How exactly do ancient texts "warn of something to come?" What did they know that we don't?

I don't know, I am not an archeologist. I can only go by claims that archeologists make. I also don't know what they knew that we don't. Is it possible that they found something that could occur on a 5,126 year timescale?

Who? They cite John Major Jenkins, for godsake. The article also mentions Alexey Dmitriev and claims that he is an astrophysicist, when he is not.

Well, they had some names that I hadn't heard of before that they say are archeologists. The site simply lists all the claims being made about 2012. They do no debunking, but they also do no supporting of the claims. Why have so many Egyptian researchers made claims that the ancient Egyptians have written text on the prohecies of 2012. Look at the Geryl section, who may not know his science…but what is the references that he uses according to this site? Where did that information come from, and what does he see in it?

No culture predicted anything about 2012, save for modern culture — primarily Western world woo-woos — and their doomsaying, all of which is shown to be b.s. on this website.

Didn't ancient cultures make "end of world" prophecies as well? Most of the Mayan codicies were destroyed, right? What if there was more to this story then what we have on record?

Like what? The "Hopi prophecy?" It's completely made up.

I don't know much about the Hopi. I just know that the 2012 people talk about it like it is real, and it exists.

I thought this page was going to be a helpful one.

Considering that it repeats many of the moronic claims refuted on this website, that's doubtful.

But it just clarified that ancient texts were trying to warn us of something to come…

How exactly do ancient texts "warn of something to come?" What did they know that we don't?

and uses references from credible people.

Who?

They cite John Major Jenkins, for godsake. The article also mentions Alexey Dmitriev and claims that he is an astrophysicist, when he is not.

It may be a little out of date with the solar storm stuff, but regardless…it worried me.

Why? There will always been some "threat" from the natural world that anyone determined enough can proclaim imminent doom over, whether it be earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis or climate change. When you go looking for this crap, you'll probably find it. That doesn't make it credible.

How many different cultures are doomsayers saying predicted something in 2012?

No culture predicted anything about 2012, save for modern culture — primarily Western world woo-woos — and their doomsaying, all of which is shown to be b.s. on this website.

Is the translation of known 2012 references ancient texts by the Maya accurate on that page?

This has been discussed here before.

http://www.2012hoax.org/forum/t-203707/

I'm assuming you don't believe in Mayan gods, so I see no reason for this to concern you. As for whether the translation is accurate, it's hieroglyphics and more of an interpretation rather than a translation. It's also extremely vague. For every moment in human history, there has been some war or catastrophe on the horizon. To make a "prophecy" in that respect is utterly meaningless, like predicting that it will rain in Brazil at some point next year.

Are there any geologists, archeologists, astronomers, biologists that support the idea of a coming mass extinction?

Not that I know of, certainly not by 2012. Of course, it's just a fact that around 98-99% of all species on Earth have gone extinct over time, and periods of mass extinctions have come and gone. That's just how it is. However, these events, while sometimes happening in a "blink" on evolutionary time scales, still take hundreds, thousands or even millions of years to fully come about.

Is it possible that we lost a warning from the ancients in a world of skepticism?

What did they know that we don't?

What actually triggered previous mass extinctions?

Lots of factors. You can read about it here.

This page mentioned that the start date of the long count was shortly after a mass extinction.

If there was a mass extinction ~5,000 years ago, where did today's biological diversity come from? That page also claims that scientists are seeking to explain Noah's flood ("mass extinction"), which is just laughably false. There's no evidence that any such flood ever occurred, so there's no reason to explain it. The most recent extinction is an ongoing event called the Holocene extinction. It's been in progress for some 10,000 to 12,000 years, and the primary cause at present is thought to be human expansion.

Along with several other ancient records.

Like what? The "Hopi prophecy?" It's completely made up.

Could anyone clarify some of these questions?

Hopefully.

this page was going to be a helpful one. But it just clarified that ancient texts were trying to warn us of something to come…and uses references from credible people. It may be a little out of date with the solar storm stuff, but regardless…it worried me. http://www.thecityedition.com/Pages/Archive/2009/2012_Doomsday_Prediction.html]

How many different cultures are doomsayers saying predicted something in 2012?
