It would probably be much like "the year without a summer" in 1816 after the massive eruption of Tambora in 1815. It wasn't a global catastrophe, but there were some crop failures and it was colder than usual.
On the other hand, Frankenstein was written as an indirect result. Byron, Keats, and Shelley were friends and they all got together at Shelley's house. Because of the bad weather, they stayed inside and decided to have a contest to see who could write the best scary story. Shelley's wife, Mary, joined in. She wrote Frankenstein. I don't think anyone remembers the stories that were written by the three famous writers, only the one by Mary Shelley. Just a little trivia there.
Anyway no, it wouldn't be a global catastrophe, but it would re regionally devastating. The good news is that there is no reason to believe that Yellowstone will have a "super eruption" within the next 90,000 years or so, if ever.

I thought that if Yellowstone ever had a super-eruption, or the eruption of its caldera happened, it would create a global catastrophe? Basically would be sending us into an ice age because of the ash blocking out the sun - type of thing? I know this is a little off topic, but I was just curious.

Even if the biggest supervolcano in the world were to erupt, it would not create a 'global catastrophe' as you are thinking of. Even volcanic eruptions that big are puny when considered against the entire earth's size.

It would take something on the scale of the Deccan Traps to cause the worldwide climate change you are thinking of. BTW, while we astronomers think of the K/T impactor as the likely cause of the demise of the dinosaurs, the geologists think of the Deccan Traps.

And before you ask: No, a volcanic eruption of the size of the Deccan Traps is not imminent. Perhaps in another 20 or 30 million years, but not anytime soon.

I understand these things just happen, and that Japan IS in the ring of fire, but.. are there any volcanoes in Japan that could create a global catastrophe if they were to erupt? I'm fearful that this could trigger something big, like Yellowstone or something of the like, because clearly, Yellowstone is not the only super volcano.

Amanda, we do not need to debunk this. Debunk the geological activity of the Earth? They are just taking precautions. They are just avoiding another disaster.
