You're right about the internet fueling the 2012 BS. I first heard of it on Y!A about 3 years ago, but hardly any of my friends in the real world know anything about it. Those who have heard of it haven't really paid any attention. I think much of it has to do with age. It seems like most middle school and high school students have heard it, at least here in the US. Many of them spend much of their free time on the internet and believe everything they find there.

The Hysteria Channel's doomathons have also been spreading it, and of course that ridiculous movie.

None of my friends seem to know/care about it, and neither of my parents knew much about it either.
My dad had seen the History Channel's apocalypse shows and dismissed them as fiction, never realizing they were even a part of this 2012 hoax.
The one person I know in real life who was aware of it was my former history/anthropology teacher, who assured me that the Maya calendar 'ending' had no bearing on any 'doomsday', and that any talk of a 2012 apocalypse was 'silliness'.

I think the main reason a lot of people don't worry about it is that most proponents about it originated on the internet. YouTube videos, Yahoo!Answers, scam 'survival' sites…the hype has been built up because of online rumors and misconceptions. Even the 2012 movie used the internet for its viral marketing, and that sucked a lot of people in.
Just goes to show how the internet can be both helpful and harmful at the same time.

Actually no adults other than my dad knew about it in my family and anyone I talked to they kinda all laughed cause of y2k (which they didn't believe either) It seems it's just kids around here and they didn't know about it till the movie.

There is crazy hype , for euro 2012 , Im not hyped personally but i <3 the olympics I just wished that the 2016 would be in chicago but that failed :(

Pretty much everyone I know has heard about 2012. Weather or not they believe it I do not know. I find it interesting that people can have such different experiences with this non event when they are located in different countries. I wonder why that is?

Iv actualy met one person who believes in it, a guy I work with. However, he also believes in the hollow earth theory (if you haven't heard of this, it's a different level of insanity) and a whole host of conspiracies. My opinion of him is that he is a very boring character, and has to add these whacky beliefs to his persona to make him seem more interesting.

I have met 3 people who have heard of it, but only one who says he believes it. I'm not even sure he really does. I think he just wants to be able to participate in a discussion between his significant other and me.

How is that possible? I can't believe somebody doesn't know the 2012 stuff yet! However, if you mean the prophecies, then yes, most people don't know them yet.
But I imagine how you felt, eh? See someone that doesn't believe in everything through the Internet is not an easy thing.

A nice story:

Some time ago, I was talking with a group of children during my social service, then the Apocalypse theme went onto discussion. What it really made my day was that none of the kids knew something about the 2012 prophecies . For them, it will just be another year. In fact, they told me a bunch of events that will take place in 2012 such as the Olympic games or the release of a new videogame. That experience made me feel so ashamed of myself, but at the same time, it made me happy.

Do you know anyone who doesn't know anything about the 2012 prophecies?
